Shannon Lamp Service has manufactured custom lampshades in Lexington, Kentucky since 1972. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive about custom lampshade sizing, pricing, ordering, fitters, shipping, and replacement shades.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Where can I find custom lampshade pricing information?
A: Because every lampshade we make is custom, pricing depends on several factors, including the shade’s size, shape, fabric, trim, and type of fitter. Our website provides step-by-step instructions to help you determine the information we need. Once you have those details, contact us by phone or email and we will be happy to provide a price for your custom lampshade.
Q: What sizes of lampshades do you make?
A: We manufacture our own custom lampshades in Lexington, Kentucky, so we are not limited to standard sizes. We can make a lampshade in virtually any size you need. Very large lampshades are available for pickup at our Lexington store, although shipping may be limited because of their size and the risk of damage.
Q: How do I determine the correct lampshade size for my lamp?
A: Choosing the correct lampshade is not a matter of following a sizing formula. A properly fitted lampshade should have the right proportion and visual balance with the lamp, and that cannot always be determined from measurements alone.
Lampshade styles and proportions have changed considerably over the years. For example, a lamp made in the 1950s or 1960s might originally have been sold with a shade size and style that would look dated today. It is hard for us to recommend an appropriate size and style based on lamp measurements and photos you provide, but we will try to advise to the best of our ability.
For the most accurate fitting, you may bring your lamp to our Lexington, Kentucky store or ship it to us. We can fit the lamp in person and make adjustments when necessary, such as changing the lamp harp to accommodate the properly sized shade.
Q: How do I order directly from your website?
A: Because much of our work is custom, we do not use an online shopping cart or checkout. Our website is designed to show the products and services we offer and to help you determine what you need. When you are ready to order, simply call or email us. If you prefer, email us your name and telephone number and we will be happy to call you.
Q: How long does it take to have a custom lampshade made?
A: Most custom lampshades are completed within approximately 7–14 days. Some orders may require additional time depending on the size, materials, quantity, or other special requirements.
Q: Does it cost more to have a lampshade custom made than to purchase one you have in stock?
A: No. We do not charge an additional fee simply because a lampshade is custom made. A shade made to your specifications is priced the same as an identical shade from our showroom inventory. For orders that are shipped, we normally make the lampshade specifically for your order rather than pulling one from our showroom.
Q: Can I bring my lamp to your Lexington store so you can fit a shade to it?
A: Absolutely. Bringing your lamp to our Lexington, Kentucky store is the best way for us to determine the proper lampshade size, shape, and fitter. We can personally fit different sizes and styles to your lamp to find the best proportion and appearance. If necessary, we can also make adjustments to the lamp, such as changing the harp, to accommodate the properly fitted shade.
When you bring your lamp to our showroom, we can also show you the different lampshade shapes, fabrics, and styles available for a custom-made shade. If we already have a finished shade in our showroom that fits your lamp and suits your needs, you are welcome to purchase it without waiting for a custom shade to be made.
Q: Can I provide my own fabric for a custom lampshade?
A: Yes. In many cases, we can make a custom lampshade using fabric provided by the customer. Because not every fabric is suitable for lampshade construction, we will need to evaluate the material before accepting the order. The amount of fabric required will depend on the size and shape of the lampshade. Contact us before sending or purchasing fabric, and we will be happy to discuss whether it will work for your project.
Q: Can you make lampshades that fit over a glass chimney?
A: Yes. We custom make lampshades with chimney fitters for lamps that use a glass chimney. These shades are designed with a fitter that rests directly on the chimney rather than attaching to a standard lamp harp. Because we manufacture our own lampshades, we can make chimney fitter shades in a variety of sizes, shapes, and fabrics to fit many older, antique, and traditional lamps.
If you are unsure what size or type of chimney fitter your lamp requires, contact us with measurements and photos, or bring the lamp and chimney to our Lexington, Kentucky showroom so we can help determine the proper fit.
Q: Can you make a replacement lampshade for an older or antique lamp?
A: Yes. We frequently make replacement lampshades for older, antique, and vintage lamps. Because we manufacture our own lampshades, we can make shades in virtually any size and offer a variety of traditional fitter styles that may be difficult to find in ready-made shades. If you are unsure what your lamp requires, contact us with measurements and photos of the lamp, and we will be happy to help determine the appropriate size, shape, and fitter.
Q: How do you ship custom lampshades, and what does shipping cost?
A: We ship custom lampshades via UPS and require a physical delivery address. Because every order is different in size, weight, and destination, shipping costs vary. When you place your order, we will provide an estimated shipping cost. The actual shipping charge is determined once your lampshade is completed, carefully packed, and ready for shipment.
Because of the increased risk of damage during shipping, we do not ship lampshades that measure more than 18 inches in any dimension. Larger custom lampshades are available for pickup at our Lexington, Kentucky store.
